Exams; a word that can evoke a myriad of emotions in students worldwide, from the diligent scholar to the carefree student, irrespective of age or background. This phenomenon, known as exam sickness or exam tension manifests in different forms of physical and emotional distress ranging from sweaty palms to sleepless nights or a fluttering in the stomach accompanied by a racing heart. For some, it is an incessant worry or self doubt that chips away at their confidence, leaving them paralyzed in the face of academic challenges

What Causes This Tension?

Well, psychology shows that exam sickness or tension is fueled by perfectionism and the fear of failure. The pressure for academic excellence, whether external or self imposed can weigh heavily on a student and this triggers the body’s stress response. In addition to this, the high stakes nature of exams can amplify feelings of anxiety or stress. This prolonged exposure to stress can lead to physical symptoms such as headaches, muscle tension, fatigue, and digestive issues among others.

How Can Students Deal With Exam Tension?

First it is important to acknowledge and validate the feelings of stress and anxiety that come with exams. This will enable you to confront them and develop healthy coping mechanisms.

Also, strong study habits are encouraged as they help you feel more confident and prepared leading up to exams.

Maintain a healthy work-life balance. It is important to study but carving out time for activities that bring joy and relaxation can help reduce exam related stress.
